Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball or MLB is a professional baseball league founded in the United States in 1903. The league consists of 29 teams from the United States and one from Canada. Teams play a total of 162 games each season. At the end of the season, the top five placed teams in the National League and American League progress to the postseason tournament that culminates in the World Series. The most dominant team in MLB history is the New York Yankees. The Yankees have won more than double the number of World Series titles as the team’s next closest competitors, the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite their historic dominance, the Yankees have failed to win a title for more than 10 years.
Nippon Professional Baseball
The Nippon Professional Baseball League or NPB is a professional baseball league founded in 1950. The league consists of 12 teams that play a total of between 130 and 140 regular season games a season. Following the conclusion of the regular season, the four teams across the two leagues progress to the Nippon Series, a post season tournament much like that of the MLB World Series. Although a distant second to the MLB in popularity, the Nippon Professional Baseball League is nonetheless one of the top 15 highest grossing professional sports leagues in the world.
Historically, the Yomiuri Giants have been the most dominant NPB team with over 20 titles. However, the team has struggled in form in recent years and have been unable to secure a title since 2012. Recently, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks have dominated the league, winning the title a number of times over the past few years.
